Roche Surprises Genentech With Takeover Bid

(NewsVisual, powered by IntellectSpace) — Genentech Inc (NYSE: DNA) was in for a surprise when partner Roch Holdings AG made it’s $44 billion takeover offer. The move could significantly change the way the two do business from here on out.

Kyoto treaty

Roche already controls 56% of the biotechnology company, though Genetentech employees expressed concern about the impact that a full takeover could have on the company’s corporate culture. The fate of the remaining 44% of Genentech is still unknown as executives maintained their silence through levitra de Monday (see article from The Wall Street Journal).

Despite resistance from employees, the fact that Genentech and Roche are already so closely tied could mean that an agreement is right around the corner. Having already been Genentech’s closest partner, Roche likely has all the necessary insight into what needs to happen to secure a deal.

Genentech may not warmly embrace a deal, but the connections, as illustrated on this IntellectSpace Knowledge Map, could go far in facilitating the transition if Roche successfully pursues full ownership of the company.

Verizon BlackBerry Storm landing page live: no new news

Verizon’s preview page for the BlackBerry viagra Storm has just gone live. Right now the only things there are a photo of the device itself, an option to sign up for email alerts, and the question “What will it feel like?” referring to the handset’s haptic touchscreen.

acheter cialis

Although Verizon aren’t saying anything about it as yet, we already know that the Storm will include both CDMA EV-DO Rev.A and GSM/UMTS HSPA for global use. It will also include GPS for VZ Navigation and, apparently, a 3-megapixel camera.

Leggiest woman, shortest man

Just as a note of caution, by entering your email address on the Storm page you give Verizon permission to send you details of phones, promotions and other could-be-considered-spam messages. Hopefully the handset will be announced soon enough so that getting an email reminder about it won’t be necessary.

when jil-lyn wonoski announced last july that she was stepping down as executive director of the melrose reception cialis room of commerce after only one year on the job, it sent congress board members scrambling to find a replacement.

Fortunately, it didn’t take them long.

Earlier this month, Joanne Schamberg, president of the Chamber board, announced that longtime Melrose resident Joan Ford Mongeau had been hired to replace Wonoski. Mongeau will officially take over at the end of September since Wonoski agreed to stay on to spearhead the Chamber’s biggest fundraiser, the annual Victorian Fair, which takes place Sunday, Sept. 14.

Mongeau has an impressive resume, having worked with several large corporations in the financial services industry over the years.

According to Schamberg, ‘Throughout the interview process, Mongeau expressed her vision for the [Chamber] director role to be one keenly attentive to collaboration and creativity.’

We spoke with Mongeau this week, and asked her about her plans for the Chamber and her roots in Melrose.

Joan, how long have you lived in Melrose?

I moved here when I was 5. My parents still live here, as do all four of my siblings. I went to Melrose Public Schools and graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1976.

You have four children. What are their ages and did/do they attend Melrose Public Schools?

My husband, Peter, and I have two sets of twins: William, 18, is going to Salem State College this fall, and Ben, 18, is going to UVM. Julia, 14, and Tim, 14, are going to be freshmen at Melrose High School.

After MHS, you attended Mount Holyoke College and graduated in 1980 with a degree in American Studies. What did you do next?

I went into financial services and started in the strategic planning area of what was then called The New England, and today is called Metropolitan Life. I was junior person, and I worked with some high-level people. It was a neat thing for someone with a bachelor’s degree. At the same time, I pursued and earned an MBA from Boston College [Mongeau also received the Edgar F. Hughes Award in Human Resources from Boston College].

Your resume says you eventually left the corporate world to ‘take on a number of independent consulting assignments.’ What services did you offer as a consultant?

My primary job was consulting with businesses with financial technology. In 1987 I went to work for Coopers Lybrand, which is now PricewaterhouseCoopers. Back then people were still doing books by hand — personal computing and networking were just taking off. I helped people figure out the best software for network-based computing. It really complimented my MBA, and I really got to roll up my sleeves and do a lot of hands-on with smaller businesses. I did that until 1994 when Tim and Julia were born. I couldn’t figure out how to get myself showered in the morning, let alone get to work on time!

So, I left the corporate world. In 1995 I started doing development work for my alma mater, Mount Holyoke, and did fundraising. I was called a head class agent, and I managed a group of 25 classmates who approached other classmates. I’m still doing that. I do training sessions out there to train new head class agents.

My most recent work was a home-based business with Still River Inc., a retirement-planning software firm. I got to see everything with that: worries about staff, worries about production, etc.

What do you see as the primary role for the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce?

To help the businesses in this community thrive, not just survive. A healthy community helps businesses, and a healthy business community helps a community itself.

Any changes you’d like to make at the Chamber right at the start? And as a resident, how have you viewed the Chamber through the years?

First off, I don’t want to talk about any changes yet because I haven’t [officially] started yet. Two things guide me: collaboration and creativity. That’s how I will approach the job.

How would you answer critics who might say you’re over-qualified for this position?

You’d first have to consider that this [Melrose] is my home and my husband’s home. This is where we chose — and I …

Can New Nina Garcia Marie Claire Show Be As Fun As Reality Itself? [Reality Realities]

well if it isn’t a blessing from the gawker media gods who brought us that pretty fundamentalist rape victim hating alaska governess! the craze network plans to double your viewing rations of project runway judge nina garcia! this was known already, actually, but now there are details: the show is called running in heels and revolves around the staff of marie claire magazine, elle having fired garcia after deciding to make a reality show about itself featuring garcia rival anne slowey! nina vs. anne! elle vs. marie claire! it is like road rules vs. the real world, only?something we’ll actually set our dvrs for! but can the show be anywhere at hand as formidable as the reality-tv-esque circumstances that enabled it to be?

Nina told me* last month she’d had plenty of offers to do other shows before, but didn’t want to do a makeover show. She hasn’t: According to Marie Claire, Running In Heels intends to “offer unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to Marie Claire and the stylish, smart women who put the magazine together each month,” including “private video confessionals,” in which “viewers will learn how the interns cope with their jobs, their superiors and each other.” That sounds so good!!! Except, of course, for two things:

1. Seriously, it’s Marie Claire.** How bad could the bullshit be at Marie Claire? The show runs the risk of being as boring as Vogue’s stupid three million dollar “documentary” web show no one except Tatiana watches. At least Elle’s Stylista has the virtue of being watchable, at minimum, as a trainwreck.

2. It’s going to be on the Style Network. Which is owned by Comcast, unlike half of new Project Runway host Lifetime, which like Marie Claire is owned by Hearst levitra kaufen. What kind of entertainment conglomerate snatches up Nina Garcia only to not air her new foray into “docu”-reality TV? Something is off there. My guess is that Nina, who is pretty controlling of her image, did not want to make a campy gossipy addictive voyeuristic Devil Wears Prada-type reality show when she is already, you know, famous.

*Yes, I know! I talked to her many times. Her favorite movie is “Scarface”! But Anne Slowey is more fun to hang out with. Which is to say, Anne Slowey would actually hang out with me. **I mean, I know people who work at Marie Claire. They are completely totally normal, and not in that “for a brainwashed person” way!

Notable Notes

~coffeeson’s baptism went very well. it was a little strange to be standing on the opposite side of the acheter cialis font making the promises rather than prompting others. we had a full house all weekend long, with in 40 friends and family milling around at everybody point or another. a seminary buddy came down to do it (and i still regard levitra online disagreeable about not giving really any other seminary buddies sufficiently intimation…your invites were seriously addressed, just not stamped…i suck). it was laudatory to see him including. if it hadn’t been by reason of said over 40 friends and family, worship would have been low crowd-erudite.~michigan’s offense looked at times get off on they were still unceasing practice drills against utah. the defense made adjustments and looked a lot better in the sponsor half, but the offense was every bit as shaky as people figured it’d be. i have more faith in threet than sheridan at qb…just open up the field for him and let him rip (exhibit a: the bomb pass to hemingway for the td). 2009 recruiting looks good already, with two motorized qbs and a bunch of other offensive skill guys. gotta give richrod time to at liberty. still, the thought of five years of futility against osu sucks.~i entertain the idea i want to learn the bass guitar. i property, badly learn it. i know some basic garage-level stuff, but i’d like to go deeper. if you ask me why the bass, and not guitar or drums, i don’t really have an meet in compensation you. there’s something about creating lines and runs, the uniqueness of the instrument (how divers solidify out to learn guitar or drums instead?), the special creativity that it entails…i just of it’d be fun. right-hand now i’m weighing whether to really put into effect lessons, which would1. focus on me out of the house,2. provide culpability and curb,3. allow me to interact with other musicians,or to buy a few books and do it on my own, which would1. enable my impatience,2. let me go at my own pace,3. stifle me locked up in my basement with no other musicians,4. enable any sum-agnate tendencies that i may have, which will cause me to thoughts about keeping up with it after a week or so.you can fathom which a man i conceive of is the improve selection.~there’s been a dog hanging far our house suited for the one-time infrequent weeks. the defunct several days, coffeewife has purchased dog victuals and toys, and this afternoon she took her (we checked) to the scan payment a make sure of-up. i don’t want a dog. i’d want a dog if i had one or two less cats. and in some ways having a dog is liking for having a flawed baby, contrariwise with fur and a tail. at least cats are all like, “did you gorge my food dish? yeah? okay, you can go now.” dogs are all allied to, “wanna play? wanna play? wanna feed me? wanna obstacle around? wanna decry? wanna go faint? wanna go inside? want me to jump on you? want me to try to eat your food? wanna play? wish me to do anything that isn’t leaving you alone?”~coffeeson is teething. i can’t deal with both that and a dog.~i’m so happy that it’s fall. the leaves are already changing. it feels great.
